Symposium on European Battery Production Research Infrastructure
With the goal of a climate-neutral future, Europe needs strategy to develop a battery production research infrastructure that contains collaboration and the creation of synergies with the European industry. Therefore, this symposium addresses the current situation, opportunities, and challenges in this field.
Organizer: Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB
One substantial European challenge of the current decade consists in setting the course for a climate-neutral future. A European strategy toward sustainable mobility represents an essential pillar of all initiatives addressing this challenge, e.g. European Green Deal. As part of this strategy, the EU aims to become one of the global leaders in the industrial and especially scientific environment of electromobility and battery production. Until now, Asian companies and research facilities have been predominantly taking the leading role in this context. Especially in large-scale production, European companies and research facilities display a significant lack of experience. To achieve the before-mentioned goal, a strategy to develop a battery production research infrastructure that contains the collaboration and the creation of synergies with the European industry is indispensable. Therefore, this one-day symposium addresses the European battery production research infrastructure. The first session will give an overview of the current situation, the role of the research facilities, and the associated value chains. Subsequently, a second session covers the approaches that address current challenges, the interaction and correlation between research infrastructure and industry, and European networks within the domain. Finally, a third session illuminates the role of digitalization and sustainability and their contribution toward finding the sweet spot of European battery production research within economic and ecological prospects.
